David Le Lay formed the practice in 1970. Based in Chelsea, David Le Lay Architects has carried out work throughout the country, though principally in London and the Home Counties. The majority of work dertaken has been high quality residential work of all types, though in recent years developments have also included commercial office space, education and ecclesiastical projects.

Many of the projects comprise new development within the grounds of listed buildings, on sites of architectural or historic importance and within designated conservation areas. The practice has experience in both landscape design and urban design, with much emphasis upon the context of any development.
